Common Mosquitoes Found in the Spring Lake Area

Different mosquito species vary in behavior, breeding habits, and peak activity times, which directly impacts how they show up around your property. Understanding these differences is key to targeting them effectively and maintaining consistent control throughout the season.

  • Aedes sollicitans

    Aedes sollicitans

Identification: Medium-sized mosquito with dark scales and distinctive white banding on the legs.

Habitat: Found along coastal marshes, salt flats, and brackish wetlands—especially near the Jersey Shore.

Behavior: Very aggressive biter, active during dawn and dusk. Can travel up to 20 miles inland in search of hosts.

Health Risks: While not a major disease vector, its abundance and range make it a significant nuisance and contributor to regional biting pressure.

  • Culex pipiens (Northern House Mosquito)

    Culex pipiens

Identification: Small brown mosquito with a rounded abdomen and pale banding on its legs.

Habitat: Prefers polluted, stagnant water such as storm drains, old containers, and rain barrels—especially in urban and suburban areas.

Behavior: Nighttime biter; often enters homes and bites while people sleep.

Health Risks: Primary vector for West Nile virus in New Jersey. Also known to carry St. Louis encephalitis and other arboviruses.

  • Aedes triseriatus (Eastern Tree Hole Mosquito)

    Aedes triseriatus

Identification: Dark mosquito with a silver-scaled thorax and narrow body.

Aedes triseriatus (Eastern Tree Hole Mosquito) Habitat: Breeds in natural containers like tree holes and artificial ones like tires and buckets in shaded woodlands and backyards.

Behavior: Active during the day; females are aggressive and target mammals, including humans.

Health Risks: Primary vector of La Crosse encephalitis, which can be especially dangerous for children.

  • Anopheles quadrimaculatus (Common Malaria Mosquito)

    Anopheles quadrimaculatus

Identification: Brown mosquito with four dark spots on each wing and a distinctive resting posture (body angled away from surface).

Habitat: Clean, slow-moving freshwater sources like ponds, lakes, and forested wetlands.

Behavior: Bites at dusk and dawn; rests indoors or in cool, damp areas.

Health Risks: Historically a malaria vector, though not a current threat in New Jersey. Still contributes to nuisance biting in rural and semi-rural areas.

    Spring Lake Professional Mosquito Control

Spring Lake, New Jersey, is a historic coastal community in Monmouth County known for its Victorian architecture, beautiful beaches, and active outdoor lifestyle. With access to the longest non-commercial boardwalk in the state, Divine Park, Wreck Pond, and numerous neighborhood green spaces, residents spend much of the year enjoying patios, coastal breezes, and outdoor recreation. However, Spring Lake’s warm summer climate, seasonal rainfall, and proximity to freshwater springs and tidal drainage systems create favorable conditions for mosquito and tick activity throughout much of the year.

Residents of Spring Lake face seasonal risks from mosquito borne illnesses such as West Nile Virus and Zika Virus, along with tick borne diseases including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. With backyard entertaining, beachside gatherings, and community managed amenities central to the area’s lifestyle, proactive mosquito and tick control supports comfortable outdoor environments.

To help reduce mosquito and tick activity, residents are encouraged to:

    • Remove standing water around properties, including in gutters, planters, birdbaths, and low lying areas of the yard.
    • Use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and pants during peak mosquito activity periods in the early morning and evening.
    • Schedule recurring professional mosquito and tick treatments with a locally owned and operated provider like Mosquito Shield of Southern NJ to maintain enjoyable outdoor spaces.

Seasonal Weather in Spring Lake New Jersey

Spring Lake experiences hot summers and mild coastal winters, contributing to an extended mosquito and tick season that often begins in early spring and can continue well into the fall. Periodic heavy rainfall, oceanfront humidity, irrigation systems, and neighborhood retention areas create standing water, while shaded parks and mature tree-lined streets provide suitable environments for ticks.

    Key Factors Influencing Pest Activity:

    • Mosquitoes and Water Proximity: The freshwater of Spring Lake, Wreck Pond, local drainage areas, and backyard water features increase mosquito activity during warmer months.
    • Ticks and Coastal Landscapes: Shaded trails in Divine Park, overgrown landscaping, and wooded edges within residential neighborhoods create ideal habitats for ticks, particularly during spring and early summer.

Frequently Asked Questions From Spring Lake Residents

How long after treatment can customers expect to notice a reduction in mosquitos on their property?
Most of our customers will see a dramatic improvement 24-48 hours after the very first treatment. After two treatments, customers should be able to enjoy their outdoor areas because we have built up a barrier to the mosquitoes and ticks. At this point, customers can call us back out if they continue to get swarmed or bitten. Most of our customers are never bitten the entire season.
Why are mosquitos a problem in your service area?
New Jersey has an excellent climate to allow mosquitoes and ticks to thrive. Primarily, the warm summers, high humidity, dense vegetation, and relatively wet conditions allow mosquitos and ticks to thrive. Standing water, streams, woodlands, and rural areas give mosquitoes and ticks ample habitat. Its low elevation and relatively flat topography means that water does not disperse rapidly. Relatively mild winters allow tick species to survive from one year to the next.
Are there any geographic features or weather patterns unique to your area that impact the mosquito population?
Mosquitoes will need a combination of rain and a couple days of warm weather to jump start their activity. That can sometimes happen in April and sometimes not happen until May. If customers sign-up for full-season service, then Mosquito Shield of Southern NJ is ready to react as soon as the weather warrants it. Summers without a mid-summer drought will see much higher levels of mosquito activity than summers that are drier. A particularly wet or snowy winter can cause some species of mosquitoes to be active even after a few seasons of inactivity. A mild winter can sometimes mean that ticks will be more active and numerous earlier in the Spring.
Is it safe for my family?
The EPA states that the products we use pose no measurable risk to humans or pets when used according to the label, which we do.
Do you come back out if we need you?
We offer a Satisfaction Guarantee. After your second comprehensive treatment, if you are getting swarmed or bitten, just give us a call and we will come back out and re-treat your area. In the unlikely event that you need a second call-back at any time during the season, our Service Manager will come out with your technician and walk the property with you to see if there are any adjustments needed to your treatment plan.
How long does it take to spray my property?
Our technician will walk your property with you on our first visit so that we get to know the specific condition of you property and how you use it. This visit may take from 15-30 minutes. After that, most visits will take less than 15 minutes, but it really depends on weather, topography, and how you use your property.
