ZIKA VIRUS

Zika is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Those who are bitten and contract the virus experience symptoms including fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (eye inflammation and redness). These symptoms can affect the infected individual for a period of time between a few days and a week. Those with the disease very rarely die, and aren’t usually even sick enough to go to the hospital. With that said, it’s important to note that contracting a Zika Virus infection while pregnant can result in a serious birth defect called microcephaly, as well as other fetal brain defects.

There have been reported cases of Zika as early as the 1950’s in places like Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. The most recent and most widespread outbreak of the virus began in Brazil in February of 2016, but has spread as travellers visited the country and surrounding areas. While the virus is expected to spread, the CDC confirms that no mosquito-borne Zika virus cases have been reported in the US.

If you’re concerned about contracting Zika Virus Disease, there are a few simple steps to take. Since Zika is most dangerous to pregnant women, avoid traveling to affected areas if you are expecting a child. Even though Zika hasn’t yet infected mosquitoes in the US, it makes sense to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes.
