1. Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Emissions
Carbon dioxide acts as a long-range homing beacon for mosquitoes. Every time a human exhales, they release a plume of CO₂ that mosquitoes can detect from a distance. Individuals who naturally emit higher volumes of carbon dioxide such as adults with high metabolic rates, pregnant women, and people who are actively exercising are disproportionately easier for mosquitoes to locate.
2. The Skin Microbiome and Carboxylic Acids
Human skin is covered in a microscopic ecosystem of bacteria. These bacteria feed on the natural oils (sebum) and sweat our bodies produce, creating distinct chemical byproducts like lactic acid and ammonia. Recent clinical studies indicate that individuals classified as “mosquito magnets” naturally excrete significantly higher levels of carboxylic acids on their skin. Because every person’s skin microbiome is unique, we each produce a distinct chemical odor profile that mosquitoes either find highly attractive or relatively uninteresting.
3. Body Heat and Sweat
Mosquitoes possess thermal sensory abilities that draw them toward heat sources. When a person exercises or spends time outdoors on a humid Pennsylvania afternoon, their core body temperature rises and they produce more sweat. This not only makes them a more visible thermal target, but it also increases the surface-level release of the chemical attractants mentioned above.
4. Genetics and Blood Type
Research indicates that up to 67% of a person’s attractiveness to mosquitoes may be rooted in their DNA a genetic link as strong as human height or IQ. While the scientific consensus on blood type remains somewhat mixed, numerous studies have found that certain mosquito species demonstrate a measurable preference for individuals with Type O blood over other blood groups.
Biological attraction is only one side of the equation; environmental factors dictate the volume and aggression of the mosquitoes hunting in a specific area. South Pittsburgh and Allegheny County feature a humid continental climate, creating highly favorable conditions for mosquito breeding.
Spring Emergence (April–May): Mosquito season locally begins when overnight air and soil temperatures consistently surpass 50°F. Spring rainstorms and snowmelt collect in woodland pools, ditches, and blocked gutters, triggering the hatching of dormant eggs.
The Summer Peak (June–August): July and August are historically the most active months for mosquito populations in Pennsylvania. Summer temperatures in the 70s and 80s, combined with the inherently high dew points of the Ohio River Valley, can compress the mosquito reproductive cycle down to just 7 to 10 days.
Fall Tapering (September–October): Mosquitoes remain active through the early fall following periods of rain, but their populations naturally decline and eventually die off following the region’s first hard frost.
