Northern Delaware’s wet springs and warm, humid summers create favorable conditions for mosquitoes during much of the warm season. From creek corridors and wooded edges to backyard gutters, drainage areas, birdbaths, and shaded patios, mosquitoes in New Castle County can stay active for long stretches, with the heaviest pressure typically building from late spring through early fall (and sometimes earlier when spring rains are heavy).
Delaware has many mosquito species, but only a small number account for most of the biting, nuisance activity, and the disease concerns people think about day-to-day in the region.
