The defining event for West Texas mosquito populations is the arrival of late-summer thunderstorms. Sudden, heavy flash floods fill dry riverbeds (draws) and industrial lowlands. This triggers massive, sudden population spikes as dormant floodwater eggs hatch simultaneously, often resulting in severe localized swarms 5 to 7 days post-rainfall.
Mild Autumns (October – November)
As temperatures cool, standing water persists much longer due to lower evaporation rates. This creates a prolonged late-season breeding environment. Culex populations typically peak during these mild autumn months, raising the localized risk of West Nile Virus transmission right up until the region experiences its first hard freeze.
A conventional schedule typically applies treatments every 3 to 4 weeks, resulting in roughly 6 to 8 applications per season. Because the mosquito life cycle is significantly shorter than the treatment window, gaps in protection naturally form. The chemical barrier degrades before the next visit, allowing breeding populations to re-establish.
Applying a barrier treatment every 10 to 17 days keeps the protective threshold consistently high. This continuous reinforcement prevents eggs that may have survived from maturing into breeding adults, creating a compounding reduction in the local population over time.
When mosquito populations rise and fall based on unpredictable, rare rain events and extreme temperature fluctuations, a static calendar schedule is inefficient.

A consistent 10-to-17-day application cycle maintains the necessary botanical compounds around the property perimeter to mask these attractants, essentially rendering the yard “invisible” to nearby adult mosquitoes.
