Our Story

Hi, my name’s Daniel Smith and I’m the owner of Mosquito Shield of North Central New Jersey.

I’m excited to share that I am setting the industry standard for residential mosquito control services, as well as tick control. I achieve this by utilizing a proprietary blend of natural oils, select control products, and a flexible spraying schedule that maximizes effectiveness.

Mosquito Shield has been in the industry for over twenty years and has continually refined the product/service protocol. I wanted to run a business that offered a service that I, and my customers, can trust. 

I appreciate the customer-forward position that Mosquito Shield takes, as that is very much aligned to how I conduct business. I truly believe we provide superior service and annual retention rates prove that customers appreciate our service.

As owner, I want to provide a mosquito and tick control solution to homeowners (and business owners) so that they and their guests can fully enjoy their outdoor property. 

Utilizing a protocol to visit each of my customers’ properties every two weeks on average, we provide service more frequently than other companies and will provide a service call at no charge if needed. I hire a team of technicians who are fully trained, knowledgeable, and professional.

After spending twenty years as a professional photographer in New York City, I was contemplating a career change. At that time, my wife, Paula, and I had a baby and moved to the suburbs of New Jersey. 

As homeowners looking forward to enjoying barbecuing on the back deck, we soon realized that our yard was overrun with mosquitoes. I realized at that time I needed a mosquito control solution for my own property. That’s what originally drove me to Mosquito Shield. I wanted to be able to enjoy my yard to the fullest, and I simply wasn’t able to do that without mosquito control. 

Coincidentally, Paula discovered through LinkedIn that a former colleague of hers ran a franchise mosquito control business in South Carolina. A number of phone calls followed, through which I learned about the industry and the business opportunity. 

I then looked into various franchise opportunities and felt Mosquito Shield was the best fit – based on their years in the business and expertise, and the fact that the territory that my home town is in was available.

While I am a New Jersey native (South Jersey), my family and I were new to South Orange, NJ when we moved here in 2018. As I didn’t have a large network of friends in the area, we utilized social media to help grow our business when it was first launched. It resonated with people who were interested in my services that I was their neighbor, and am always available to answer any questions. 

I strive to make sure my customers’ expectations are met (or exceeded). My wife assists me as needed and I have a team of techs who I train and assist throughout the season.

Last year, I expanded my territory so it stretches from towns along the Hudson River (ie Hoboken, Jersey City) all the way to the western parts of Morris County. There are approximately 900,000 serviceable households in my territory – and they range in size from 0.1 to 2.0 acres (the smaller properties are largely on the eastern side of the territory).

As for some of my family’s favorite spots, we like to go for walks or bike rides in the South Mountain reservation. During the summer, my wife and daughter are frequent visitors to the town pool or the beaches in NJ. As a family, we enjoy patronizing local restaurants in South Orange, Maplewood, West Orange, and Millburn. My daughter is 4 years old, so we’ve probably visited every playground in the area as well.

In addition to going through regular training with Mosquito Shield personnel, I take continuing education classes through the New Jersey Pest Management Association and the EPA. I am certified with the NJDEP and am always reading about industry topics to stay abreast of current information and to further my own education – not only about mosquito control but about pest control in general. 

Having expertise in the services my business provides is very important to me. Additionally, I am communicative and strive to respond to inquiries and special requests within a timely manner.

As a photographer and professional retoucher, I was a perfectionist and studied my craft continuously. I approach my Mosquito Shield business in the same way – always learning, always striving to provide the best service a homeowner can expect. 

If a customer ever has any questions or concerns, I am available to speak with them anytime to provide a solution. My customers’ satisfaction is my #1 goal. Going into my fifth season, over 90% of my customers return year over year.
